Warranty and returns policy

Please read before you order
Our parts are used or refurbished units imported from Japan. Check fitment with us before you buy: we do not accept returns or give refunds because a part doesn't fit your vehicle.
Section 1 – Returns and refunds
We do not accept returns or give refunds for parts that don't fit. The one exception: if the Japanese specifications we posted for an item were wrong, we will consider an exchange, return or refund.
Full details are in our Return & Refund Policy.
Section 2 – Shipping information
- Shipping and freight charges are non-refundable.
- You can pick up your order at our San Jose warehouse instead of paying for freight.
- Check the outside of the packaging before you sign the delivery receipt, and write any damage on it. Signing a clean receipt releases the freight company from responsibility.
- Shipping insurance is provided by the freight company, not by Southbay JDM, and we are not responsible for damage caused by rough handling in transit.
- Every engine passes a multi-point inspection and a compression test. We only ship engines with good compression results.
Section 3 – Warranty periods
Coverage starts on the date of sale. The warranty shown on each listing applies to that item.
| Item | Warranty |
|---|---|
| Used replacement engines | 90 days |
| Used performance engines (VTEC, turbo) | 30 days |
| Head gaskets (any application) | 30 days |
| Used replacement transmissions | 60 days |
| Used performance transmissions | No warranty |
| Rotary engines (Mazda RX-7 13BT, 13BTT, 20B) | No warranty |
| Electrical and electronic parts | No warranty |
Section 4 – What the warranty covers
The limited warranty covers these internal engine parts:
- Pistons, rings and pins
- Crankshaft and main bearings
- Connecting rods and rod bearings
- Camshaft and cam bearings
- Timing chain and gears
- Valves, valve springs, seals and guides
- Oil pump
- Pushrods, rocker arms and shafts
We also warrant that the engine block, cylinder walls and cylinder head are free of cracks and distortion.
If a covered part fails, we decide whether to repair the engine with rebuilt or serviceable used parts or to exchange it.
Section 5 – External parts not covered
External and bolt-on parts are not covered, including:
- Intake and exhaust manifolds, carburetors and distributor
- Starter, sensors and other electronic parts, and emission devices
- Flywheel, clutch and pressure plate
- Water pump, thermostat, belts and hoses
- Oil pan and valve cover
- Transmissions, drive shafts, half shafts and engine mounts
Section 6 – What is not covered
- Labor to remove or install a repaired or exchanged engine
- Towing, freight or delivery charges
- Damage caused by abuse, neglect, an accident or natural events
- Loss caused by improper installation
- Overheating damage, including oil leaks and blown head gaskets, or damage from poor coolant circulation, a clogged radiator, a stuck thermostat or a faulty water pump
- Gradual loss of performance from normal wear, unless a part actually breaks
- Modifications or uses the engine wasn't built for, such as a turbo, supercharger, nitrous or an aftermarket-tuned ECU
- Racing or competitive driving
- Failure of parts this warranty doesn't cover
- Tune-ups, adjustments, filters, hoses, belts, lubricants, coolant, spark plugs and other maintenance items
- Deterioration or pre-ignition (detonation) damage
- Repairs made without our prior authorization
- Damage from a defective timing belt (install a new one)
Section 7 – Limits of this warranty
- A repair or exchange does not restart or extend the warranty period.
- This limited warranty replaces all other express warranties. Any implied warranty is limited to the length of this warranty, and we take on no other obligation or liability.
- We are not responsible for incidental or consequential damages, such as loss of use, lost time, inconvenience or commercial loss.
Section 8 – How to make a warranty claim
- Call or email us to open a claim. Have your order number ready.
- Ship the engine back to us at your cost. We send a replacement only after we have inspected the returned engine and confirmed the problem.
- If the engine is defective, we refund your return freight and send a replacement. If it isn't, you pay the shipping both ways to get it back.
- Return the engine in the same condition we sent it. Any missing parts are charged to you.
- If we ship a replacement first, the original must reach us within 60 days or you will be charged the full price of the engine plus freight.
Section 9 – Installation and maintenance requirements
Skipping any of these voids the warranty:
- A certified mechanic installs, maintains and adjusts the engine.
- Ignition timing is set to the manufacturer's specification.
- The oil is changed after the first 3,000 miles.
- Cylinder head bolts are re-torqued to the manufacturer's specification.
- The cooling system is checked, serviced if it is rusty or contaminated with oil, and refilled with new coolant.
- The timing belt, oil filter, water pump and spark plugs are replaced.
Section 10 – Other important notes
- An engine shipped with accessories may not meet state or federal emissions rules. Move the emission devices from your old engine to the replacement to stay compliant.
- Add-on parts attached to an engine are there for testing only and come free of charge.
- The price covers the long block only: the cylinder head and short block.
Section 11 – Sales policy
- All sales are final. No refunds or exchanges, except as described in this policy and our Return & Refund Policy.
- Deposits are non-refundable.
- You can cancel an order until it ships. Cancelled orders paid by check have a $25.00 fee.
- Refused or returned orders are charged a 20% restocking fee on the invoice amount, plus all freight to bring the item back to our warehouse.
Section 12 – Condition of used engines
- Our used engines have between about 20,000 and 60,000 miles, depending on the model year. They are not new.
- Expect minor scratches and other marks from normal use.
- Fragile plastic, metal or rubber pieces can bend or break in transit. These can be swapped from your original engine or bought at a local used-parts store.
